The Atmosphere Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology and the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture, has launched the ‘Bamboo for Climate Mitigation’ project in the Maldives. The project’s main objective is to plant bamboo seedlings extensively across the Maldivian islands and promote sustainability and research.
In the initial phase, 500 bamboo seedlings will be distributed to both community and industrial islands. Generous donations of two bamboo seed varieties have been received from private individuals. The project emphasizes active involvement from stakeholders, including government authorities, private organizations, and communities, to raise awareness about the environment and ensure long-term sustainability.
Aligned with the Maldives’ commitment to achieving carbon neutrality as per the Paris Agreement and the Climate Emergency Act, the project addresses challenges arising from housing and urbanization, leading to a decline in green cover on many islands.
The project also includes a seminar titled ‘Working Towards Carbon Neutral Maldives with Bamboo,’ featuring Dr. Nambi Barathi, an expert in bamboo cultivation. Dr. Barathi will focus on the Beema bamboo clone, known for its high biomass yield and significant carbon sequestration capabilities.
