The recent change in the commission structure of booking.com means that service charge and transfers are now subject to commission. The Employment Act of Maldives requires all Service Charge collected to be distributed to the employees, with an allowance to deduct a maximum of 1% as administrative fee. What is MATI’s response to these changes by Booking.com?
We have sent an official letter of concern and we have been constantly following up with booking.com’s regional office for updates. Finally, on the 2nd of September 2019, they have indicated that MATI’s concerns will be shared with senior personnel in their head office for consideration.
In the meantime, they have indicated that their legal team has cleared the new commission structure to be in compliance with the laws of Maldives, including commissions on Service Charge. We are in the process of obtaining a legal opinion on this.
On behalf of our members, MATI will lobby tirelessly to change the new commission structure to one that has less impact on the businesses.
